There's always quite a lot of mentioning of the Statutes of Limitations. Here's the list, find your state. "Open Accounts" are such as credit cards. "Oral Agreements" are such as "hand shake agreements, etc"

If a credit card is charged off and the credit card company sells the account to a collection agency, would the SOL be from the date of the original creditors last contact or the date the collection agency purchased the account. And is it different if the account is just turned over to a collection agency instead of purchased by one?

The best I can tell, the SOL starts 180 days after the debt becomes delinquent.

But if the debt is bought by a collection agency, does the SOL start over? This is all so confusing.

No that does not restart the SOL.

I think this is applied to the SOL for credit report aka 7 year reporting time.

The SOL starts from the date of last activity on the account. When it is sold, transferred, etc, doesn;t matter.

This list is from a collectors site itself. It is also the same as most I've seen elsewhere. That's not to say that some states might change however.

The site below lists the correct information on SOL period. You can rely on information from the website below:

You can also get more information on the FTC website.
