my credit is terrible, but the only debts on my report are just about ready to hit the 7 year mark. Will they drop off if the creditors have not been able to contact me?

Hi SP

Welcome to the forums.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act keeps accurate negative information in the credit file for 7 years from the date of first serious delinquency or the date on which it got charged off.

After the 7 year reporting period, this information will be removed automatically by the credit bureaus even if you have not been in contact with your creditors.

You have the right to dispute with that bureau if negative information still appears in your file after the 7 years reporting time.

Roxette

Bad marks take shape with the way accounts are reported to the bureaus. Based on these, the credit scores are calculated. When you are in the process of repairing the bad credit, the credit scores will improve accordingly.

It is the current score that is viewed keenly by your lenders before credit is extended. When you have completed the payments, there will be an increase in the scores but the effect will be slightly lower if a large number of negative information has already entered in the file for the 7 years.

The lesson to be learnt here is that handle the debt accounts right from the day it incurred. Do not go for revolving credit. It is an extension for which you need to pay the company. You will be a privileged customer of the lenders if you make regular and timely payments. It is my personal suggestion.

Is it true that a debt will drop off a credit report after 7 years? And if so, does this mean that the debt is wiped out and it no longer needs to be paid off?
