I just received a call, and the person called themselves Stephanie, left me a voicemail and asked for a call back. When I returned the call I got a recorded voice that said all reps are busy , please hold. It doesn't say who the company is..the number is 800-457-3987.

Thanks, Mike. I have tried several times to return their call and all I get is that stupid recording. Guess I'm going to have to hold forever and see what they want. First time they've ever contacted me so I don't know what it is concerning.

Before devugling information to the company about your name and SSN (which you should never give out), call to find out what kind of company they collect for. You can perhaps google the company to see what they collect on. This will give you a heads up on what they're calling about. Giving them your name will show that you've been contacted about the account.

Watch yourself with Encore. They will harass you from 8am til 9pm calling every 30 minutes or less. Half the time when they call, no one is on the other end. If you have caller ID, you will see that they will call from Lawrence, MA, Olathe, Kansas and Nevada. They handle inside collections for Capitol One. Don't take anything off of them. Stand your ground and be firm with them.

Good advice about not giving any info until they properly identify themselves (and convince you in writing that the debt is valid and they are authorized to collect it). Even then, they wouldn't need your SSN or bank account for any legitimate purpose.
You should know, though, that just calling a toll-free number (800 numbers and now also 888, 877, and 866) gives the company the number you're calling from, and by extension your name. If it's a number they already tried to reach you at, they will know you called back even if you don't tell them who you are when you call, and even if they put you on hold and you never reach a human. Even if your phone number is unlisted, or in a roommate's name, you've probably given it to some business somewhere, so odds are it's available to the CA and they can match you with it.
This is called ANI, and is UNRELATED to Caller ID. You can block Caller ID all day long from your phone, but if you call a toll-free number that company knows who's calling.
If you want to call a company without identifying yourself, call from a payphone which is not near your home or work.

First, I might ask if this debt collection service has any reason to be calling you. Then I might ask if you've gotten a new phone number recently.
I ask this because I recently did, and just a couple hours after switching numbers, before anyone knew my new number, I started receiving phone calls from this compay. I ignored them at first, but after receiving one every business day for a week, I finally called back. Sure enough, they had the name of the previous owner of my phone number in the system. Shouldn't be receiving any more calls from them.
