Whenever entering private details such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, etc. make sure the URL starts with https

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the primary and default method of communication on the WWW (world wide web). However, there is a secure version of this called HTTPS which uses the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to encrypt your data as it is transfered to and from the webserver. You'll notice that your bank and other reputable organizations use this consistantly.

If it does not use SSL (https://) then *DO NOT* use it. I don't care if they're legit and good intentioned. Why? Because hackers can verify easily sniff out network traffic ... which would include your personal information. All it takes is once and you're done for. And it could be hijacked from any point in transit ... your local ISP ... or on the webserver itself. You just don't know. Play it safe, use SSL. Smile

You'll also notice a lock in the bottom right hand corner of the screen for safe websites.

Anytime the lock is there, means the site is safe.

I am glad to see people posting on this forum letting our community see what to be aware of because there are people out here who just take the little things and try to find out things about you I never thought it could be people hacking into stuff stealing peoples identity, and what freaks me out the most is that they have websites that teach people how to do that plus they have books on that sort of stuff its amazing what they let the people learn these days on that information!I think that should be banned and agaisnt the law to even have websites and books like that its just crazy these days!

Trouble96_2000,

Actually I have been sitting with her and she has improved her awareness. She now knows what to look out for after a little trial and error.

Exactly trouble,
I think that if something doesn't sound right or look right then it is not right because sometimes you think something is so good and turns out not to be,and turns around and bites you where it really hurts!
