I got a similar type of call today. They said "if you are not <robo> please hang up. This concerns a debt collection please call 1-800-XXX-XXXX for more information. <CLICK>."
By the time I got the pencil and paper, they had hung up. They read off the 1-800 number fast and only once. What's up with that? I mean, if you really are a legitimate agency, you'd repeat the number at least a couple of times.
On the other hand, if you are trying to make calls very quickly to a large number of people, hoping maybe 1 in 100 calls back, then the message will be short and sweet.
I have like a 750 credit score, very little debts, and I keep track of all my acccounts and debts online almost every day. Nothing is "overdue" and certainly not in collection.
Reading some of the postings here, I would only say that it appears that some folks might try to prey upon the guilty feelings of people or panic them by alleging there is some debt.
Make sure if you are paying a "debt" that it really is to the person to whom it is owed to. If you wire, money order, or send a check to someone, the money is GONE for good. And if that was not the person to whom the money was owed, well, you're screwed.
NEVER give out personal information on the phone - no social security numbers NOTHING. Identity theives troll for this sort of thing and once they have a complete profile on you, they can open up accounts in your name.
Nevertheless, these sort of calls are unnerving. I had a credit card stolen this summer. Maybe I need to run a credit report.
