I got a similar type of call today. They said "if you are not <robo> please hang up. This concerns a debt collection please call 1-800-XXX-XXXX for more information. <CLICK>."

By the time I got the pencil and paper, they had hung up. They read off the 1-800 number fast and only once. What's up with that? I mean, if you really are a legitimate agency, you'd repeat the number at least a couple of times.

On the other hand, if you are trying to make calls very quickly to a large number of people, hoping maybe 1 in 100 calls back, then the message will be short and sweet.

I have like a 750 credit score, very little debts, and I keep track of all my acccounts and debts online almost every day. Nothing is "overdue" and certainly not in collection.

Reading some of the postings here, I would only say that it appears that some folks might try to prey upon the guilty feelings of people or panic them by alleging there is some debt.

Make sure if you are paying a "debt" that it really is to the person to whom it is owed to. If you wire, money order, or send a check to someone, the money is GONE for good. And if that was not the person to whom the money was owed, well, you're screwed.

NEVER give out personal information on the phone - no social security numbers NOTHING. Identity theives troll for this sort of thing and once they have a complete profile on you, they can open up accounts in your name.

Nevertheless, these sort of calls are unnerving. I had a credit card stolen this summer. Maybe I need to run a credit report.

You are entitled to a free credit report in many States every year (in Georgia, two per year).

The credit reporting companies websites don't make it easy, of course. They'd rather SELL you a credit report, or worthless 'credit protector' services.

Equifax has a free credit report link: equ ifax.co m/fcra

Don't fall for "freecreditreport.com" or other come-on sites. They give you a "free 30 day trial" with a negative-option to cancel. Walk away from negative option, PERIOD.

My report was clean, just two credit cards and my mortgage, and nothing else. I probably dinged my old credit score by cancelling my sears credit card (open since 1984). But frankly, I have little use for consumer debt. And you should, too.

The BEST way to avoid debt problems is to avoid debt, period. Learn to live without and pay cash for cars and other items.

Can't pay cash? Don't buy it. People sell themselves into debt-slavery so they can have shiny objects like cars and wall-screen tee-vees. Stupid!

We ridiculed the Manhatten Indians for selling Manhatten to the settlers for $24 worth of beads and trinkets. 400 years later, half of america is in debt to credit card companies and the Indians are raking it in with their gambline enterprises.

Who's laughing now?

Just say NO to consumerism. Just say NO to debt. Buying groceries on your credit card is a BAD idea. Payday loans are just a way to bleed to death even faster.

Live without. You'd be surprised how "wealthy" a life you can have for free or nearly nothing.

Recieved a letter from Mitchell Kay P.C. (personal cheat) saying I owe a debt that has already been settled July 08.
I kept all of my reciepts & have the credit report saying that it's been updated to show it's been paid. I called Mitchell Kay's office only to be treated rudely by someone who can't even speak conherent English. They also asked for my SSN & I said "NO" but they rattled off the last four didgets. HOWTHE HELL DO THESE PEOPLE HAS THIS INFO?? & how scary that they do. Is there anyone out there who has info about class action suit against them??

i got a letter recently from the so called firm addressed to my Maiden name (i've been married for 6 years) telling me i owe money for an old bank account that "maybe" had a negative balance. i called and they couldn't even say for sure what it was for. they quoted me my old address and old cell phone number so i thought maybe i left a bank account with a negative balance but couldn't remember doing so. this was dated in 2000 and i just got this letter. now they've offered to reduce the debt to 1/2 of what i potentially owe. not sure if its legitimate or not so i'm checking with the bank. shady thing: i asked they mail verification of the debt or copy of judgment and mail to me but they responded by telling me to pay only 1/2. this is not on my credit report. bizarre.

I just got a letter today from Mitchell. N. Kay about a supposed debt from 20+ years ago from a cancelled credit card that (at least to my knowledge) was paid off. So glad I found this site before I called them. This, I might add, is a debt that has never shown up on my credit report.

Question: What happens if I just ignore this?

Just checked the Statue of Limitations for my state - thanks for that advice. It's six years, although I've been warned that agenices like this one will move the timeline. But legally, it's the last date of credit card use with the original creditor

Recevied a phone call from this place today at 12 noon. Apparently it was the automated ringer stating that this was an attempt to collect a debt from my mother. Let me tell you, my mom is 73 years old (and all of her faculties are still intact and she has AAA credit!!!! It's a d**m shame that people will stoop this low to get money (by any means necessary). Well we probably won't be hearing from this law firm again after the words that were said to the quirky receptionist. They are not a law firm and they're too stupid to realize that folks are catching on to their scam!!!!!

I have ignored all of their phone calls and all the letters, 2 at a time, from them for a long time and they have done nothing.

In the beginning they sent me letters in the name of an attorney from my state, I traced the chain of the letters. Then they started to send me letters from his "Plaza Associates" and now I get phone calls from his "Law offices of Mitchell N. Kay" about a very serious matter. I also get letters from his law office now too.

He uses these affiliated offices but he sends you letters on their letterhead so you will think the attorney, if you are in one of those states, is contacting you to scare you into paying. I didn't fall for it. I never got one phone call from another attorney on this. Only Mitchell N. Kay and Plaza Associates.

I got the 55% off letter from this firm last week. They say its from a closed checking account from 5 years ago from Wells Fargo. I had vetted heavily a few months ago to qualify for my fixed mortgage. I admit some little embarrassing things from younger days came up and I paid them down but nothing from Wells Fargo. Thank God I googled this firm.
