Also, you can have anything "extra" removed...such as some outrageous long distance plans, etc. Only add what you really need and use.

You can also look into getting a voIP phone: it basically allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular phone line. Some voIP services allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. It's usually much cheaper than a regular phone line.
