I was contacted by RJM Acquisitions. I was told that they were trying to collect a debt, on two accounts I had with Wachovia. I took the settlement amount. This was back in March 2009. I contacted Wachovia tonight, August 2009, and was told that these accounts are still outstanding and have not been cleared by RJM. I followed the checks online, I have viewed the copies of the checks, I can see when they were deposited. Why have they not cleared these accounts with Wachovia. Who is taking the money now?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

RJM is saying I owe money on a three year old debt I know nothing about ... looks like it was passed from a few questionable creditors and now it's with them. Would you suggest paying the hundred dollars or fighting them?

Ok, I received a letter from these people too...it was not addressed to me, but to a different name, at my address. The SSN (that 1st 4 digits that were shown) were the same as mine. It was for an HSBC account with a debt of like $2500. I have had an HSBC account in the past, but this particular account and the person's name are not on any of my (three major) credit reports. I contacted RJM about it (unfortunately before I found all these posts), explained that basically it wasn't my debt and the lady asked if I wanted to close the account. I said, "will that show up as a default on my credit report?" and she said "no, it just closes the account". I didn't entirely understand how you can close an account with an outsanding balance with no negative impact on your credit, but fearing this was a case of identity theft, I said go ahead and close it. So my question is...if this bad account and this other person's name are nowhere on my credit reports, how do I verify what's really going on here?? That is, I don't know whether my identity was ACTUALLY stolen, or whether RJM is just somehow attributing this account to me on false pretenses.

If it is for a different name, why did you open it? You should have marked it "No Such Person at this address" and given it back to the postman. It's actually against Federal law to open mail that is not in your name.

I actually opened it by mistake with the rest of the mail, then realized it was addressed to a different name. That's really not the point though...this account is apparently associated with MY current address and SSN (or perhaps one that is VERY close to mine...don't know that 5th digit), which defintiely makes it my business!!

But how can you prove it but by the letter itself? That's all I'm saying here. That info is verified and protected (SS#) BUT the 4 digits only have 10,000 combination so they are repeated often, but yes, the chance of that going to your house is pretty slim. BUT, if you used it to file fraud watch or something, I do believe it would be inadmissible as evidence. IMO.

And now, the 5th (and unmatching) digit in the picture makes things more interesting. If the 5th digit doesn't match then it isn't your Social Security # and so there isn't a problem.

Yes, it is odd that it went to your address. But without admissible evidence, you have nothing to go on to remedy the situation. I'd tape it shut and write "Opened in Error. Addressee Not Known" and send it back.

That is of course, simply my opinion.

My friends start involking your rights against collecters. There is no city state fedarl law that says you have to pay collecter. Go on line and copy a cease and desist letter to your documents and use it. Once sent they can never contact you again on that bill. If they do you have the right to sue them. Check it out. I have been using the same letter for 5 years. I just form it to the company I am sending it to.

I have to say that RJM was not a big hassle with e, they sent me a letter with the right amount i owed, and account number. I owed 510.00 dollars fyi. I did get a letter with a gift incentive, but lets be real it shouldn't have to take gifts to get you to pay what you owe if you really owe it. well i called them up and told them i had 300.00 at that moment and they settled for it. 210.oo dollars off, couldnt get better and they cleared me on the same day, now i just opened a bank account with bank of america and things are great thanks to RJM.

Dispute the address with the reporting bureau
