Default Credit Card Skimmers...

Heard about this on the news....And I believe I am a victim.

I check my debit card online, and saw a $72 charge at Speedway gas station in Columbus....I thought, "Geez, when did I buy $72 in gas? I suck at math, but I do know that even at $4/gallon, my 14 gallon tank doesn't cost $72 to fill, thank God. While I'm scratching my head at that one, I see a $160 charge to Macys. I KNEW I hadn't been to Macy's recently..And when I go, I use my Macy's charge to get the extra discount, then I make a payment to my card in cash immediately. (Yay for grace periods!)

So I call my bank, and they are sending me paperwork to fill out, which I have to have notorized, and after they investigate, I'll get my money back.

I did some investigation myself, and talked to Loss Prevention at Macy's. They found the receipt, the signature of course was a scribble, and they said the card was swiped, not keyed in. So that means someone made a duplicate of my number somehow. I HAVE my debit card on me. It never leaves me.

I've not contacted Speedway yet, but I am going to. Somehow someone got my number. I'd say it was a bank error if it wasn't TWO separate charges on the same day.

Scary stuff. Be careful everyone! I'll let you all know what happens.

Thanks for the hads up Jessi- that is really scary. I know when they used to have the carbon paper thing with the cards, I would always ask for it afterwards.

It's good to see you, I have missed you!!..karen

I've been very busy. My job is pure chaos lately...We have new management, and they're all about cutting corners, and want to keep hiring new people, and no more supervisors. Grrrrr

I am just so irritated with this whole debit card situation. I have to go run all over the place, file a police report, get this form notorized. Then wait for MY MONEY to come back.

Apparently the charge at Macy's was for a $149 dollar BLENDER. I think I bought my blender at Wal-Mart for about $20. If my blender cost $149, it should wake me up in the morning and have my smoothie ready. Then it should help me take a shower and get dressed. Maybe even paint my toenails....

LOL Jessi! For $149, I agree...it should do more than JUST blend!!

Sorry to hear about your debit card situation and hope it gets resolved quickly. Wanted to share a story that happened to me...
...I live in Virginia...was on business in Houston, used my CREDIT CARD (hotel, gas, restaurant). Two weeks later, I was in Boston, MA...used CC at a restaurant, no problem...2 hours later, I try to use card at a hotel and the CC had "fraud blocked it" b/c several purchases were made at a Home Depot...IN NEW ORLEANS!!! About the SAME time I was using it in BOSTON!!

CC company said the purchases were made in N.O. by swiping the card! They said it's not uncommon that once they get the number, they sell it and it is hard coded/embossed onto new cards! I had NEVER used that card for anything other than travel, and since these purchases were outside of my normal purchasing habits, they froze the account. Imagine if I had ever used it before at a Home Depot Store...they could've really done damage.

Short story...it happens with all cards, credit & debit. Just another reason to carefully review your statements.

I check my online banking a few times a day.

I'll get this all worked out, and luckily it was only a bit over $200. Could have been much worse. But it is MY MONEY.

I agree! It is your money and no one should be stealing! Most people live paycheck to paycheck and having $200 taken from their debit card would cause serious overdraft problems. Sure, the bank would fix it but what a nightmare.

I guess I'm getting old b/c I keep thinking, why do people keep doing this?! (Rhetorical question!)

Hi Jessi!! Love you!!

That completely sucks..And it's scary stuff. There was a big string of that stuff going on around here last year. A couple people I work with were victims. I don't pay much attention to my statements, I think from now on I will.

Jessi I would file a fraud alert with the credit bureaus just for a layer of protection. It looks like you have everything else covered.

Cajun--My credit reports are all on lock down. I've pulled them all, and checked them over. And I've been subscribed to credit monitoring for years. If you saw some of my early threads back in the olden days, I had lots of accounts that weren't mine...Now I check them fanatically.

Fins--Keep track of your statements, you don't want to pay for someone elses blender...lol I LOVE YOU!
