Picture it: Heaven. A small, feisty woman is at the pearly gates.
St. Peter: "Name?" That small woman: "Estelle Getty, aka Sophia Petrillo". St. Peter: "Biggest accomplishment on earth?" Estelle/Sophia: "Keeping 3 middle-aged women in line: a bed-hopping tramp, a ditz, and my daughter, who finally saw some sense and kicked Stan, that yutz of a husband, to the curb". St. Peter: "Sophia!!!!!!!" What took you so long!!! Come on in!!" Rest in peace, Estelle--and thanks for the millions of laughs on the Golden Girls and one of the all-time great characters.

She passed away quite a few years back, didn't she?

Did you know she was actually younger then some of the other cast members that played the 3 women?

I think that you are correct she was the youngest of them. I really love that show and it is still on lifetime and no matter how many times I have seen them it still makes me laugh.

I used to watch the golden girls when I was little (like 5-10). Sophia was always my favorite, because she was funny and reminded me of my grandma. It is sad to see her go.

Okay- I just saw the headlines.

I had been under the impression that Getty had already passed on, as a few years ago, when the seasons first started being released on DVD, they ran a "behind-the-scenes" special about "The Golden Girls" on tv, and it featured cast interviews. The cast kept refering to Getty in the past-tense, saying things like, "We love you and miss you" so I had assumed she had already passed on. Looking back, it's now apparent that they were refering to Getty's current mental health, as she was afflicted with dementia.

So now I'm bummed that Estelle has "died again".

On a side note, does anybody remember the spin-off series, "Golden Towers"? It was lacking, but it was fun to see the majority of the characters again ( sans Arthur, which is too bad. Dorothy was my favorite character and her relationship with Sophia was definitely one of the highlights of the original series ).

Anyway, I never get tired of watching "Golden Girls" reruns. In fact, it's on Lifetime right now...excuse me.. ^_^

Yeah, I was pretty bummed when I heard she had passed away too.

I remember Golden Towers also. Wasn't Cheech Marin, of Cheech and Chong, in it also? It didn't last very long at all, as I recall.
