I live out in the country and have a barn, one of the neighbors cats had kittens in my barn. Well she got ran over the other night and I have these approximately 6 to 8 week old kittens in the barn. I have been feeding them canned food and giving them water.
Because they aren't used to human contact obviously since they were born in the barn how do I keep them warm this winter and water from not freezing in the barn. I have been forbidden by my husband to bring them into the house. I was going to take them to the humane society but my father told me they would probably put them to sleep because of the number of kittens they have already.
In other words they will have a better chance of living in my barn and eating the mice and being fed regualr cat food than being put to sleep. We have lived here for 7 years and this is the first time this has happened to us and am not sure how to handle it. Any advise would be great.

Lady, Isn't there a no kill shelter near you? Usually the humane society will not kill animals.Can you bring them to a vet , who may know people who want to adopt a kitten.

good idea Kash....Check for any Pet Rescue agencies. We have a feline rescue here in town that my daughter volunteers at and they do not euthanize.

There is but they are full. That's a good idea I will call my vet tomorrow, she is a vet especially for cats, I just feel so bad for the poor little things. I would keep them but I already have 5 with two that were meant to live in the barn but brought them in for the winter last year and they haven't left since (too afraid to go outside becuz they might have to stay out there) (lol)

Ladybug- know the feeling!! I have 6 cats that I am waiting for the shelter to come and get. The momma had a kitten-others died, I guess about 7 months ago, she left for a while and came back with her boyfriend and 3 other kittens  For some reason strays find their way here. LAst year one brought her 2 babies in the winter- I put a box with newspapers and hay for them outside, and kept water and food for them-they stayed under my house.Eventually they ran off.
Maybe you can put an ad at the vets office that you have barn cats for free, I see that at stores, etc--good luck..karen

i placed an ad at my vet's office when my cat had kittens.

How did you keep the water from freezing?
That is my biggest concern. I know that they can keep warm in the barn with all the hay but what about the water? I just fed them this morning they seem really healthy I thought I had 4 but I don't know what happend to the 4th one..I hope it didn't get eaten by something.

Put an ad up at the vet. You could also put up a note at the local feed store (if you have one). A friend of mine had kittens a few months ago. When they were old enough she put them in a box and drove to Walmart. She stood in front of Walmart with this box and had the kittens gone to new homes within an hour.

Take a low wattage light bulb, (40 watts should do it) and put it inside a large can with the lid on. It will act as a small heater. Put it inside a box with some soft bedding and show the spot to the kittens. They will know to go there to keep warm. It will also keep the water from freezing if you situte everything properly.

Oh my god thank you so much frog, that is wonderful advice. I knew that there would be someway to do this without costing any money...thanks a million....right now they are in one stall of the barn..thanks so much for the suggestion. I will get on that right away...we are suppose to get snow here over thanksgiving that should give me some time to get everything set up.

I took my orphaned kittens to a no kill shelter and they will find homes for them. They have a little spot in Petco that the cats are put up for adoption.
They do in depth home studies on prospective kitty parents:) I am so happy and relieved that they will have a good life. I don't care that it cost me a $154.00 I am just so grateful that they took them.
