I remember back in the 70's with the gas shortage and they lowered the speed limit to 55 I believe then. I personally think they should reduce the speed limit back down to 55 to help people out with the high price of gas.

Does anyone else agree with me? I personally think that 75 mph is way too fast, especially if your car has broken down and you are sitting on the side of the interstate and idiots are flying by doing more than the speed limit .

Sorry, I admit that i'm a speeder.

I say if you want to go 55, that's okay; pull in the right lane and you can go 55. I don't think everyone should have to because you want to.

In all honesty, would lowering the speed limit really make people drive slower? Not really, there'll just be more tickets issued. Heck, there's already a 45 mph limit in construction zones, and people still fly through at 80.

I agree about lowering the speed limit on highways and freeways near and through cities, but out in the middle of nowhere it should be 65 or 70. I still drive 55 even if the limit is higher, I just can't afford to drive fast as it sucks up your gas!

Where I work at in Texas you would get flattened driving 55.I drive 75 out of town areas to keep up with traffic & still get passed. My little Nissan truck thankfully is still good on gas.

75 you can drive 75? here it is 65 but the big trucking company drivers can only go 62 they say it will save their company a couple million dollars a year. I also am a speeder But my explorer sits (except for going to work) if we go anywhere we use hubby Ram. It is soooooo much better on gas than the Explorer. I can't wait until I can get rid of that POS. Don't get me wrong it is a good truck but it is getting old and is starting to have problems that I just don't want to fix. One problem is going to cost us almost $1000 to fix. So I figure drive it less and I just may get a better trade in price for it. Hubby's truck has to get paid off before I can go car shopping. But I am not sure that I want to go back to a car With living is Wisconsin and going up to the cabin in the winter I need something bigger that can go through all the snow. So I just may have to put up with paying the price for gas.

I live right off I-75 and if you go any less than 70 you are going to get ran over quick....I would NOT be in favor of lowering the speed limit, sorry!!!!

The truckers are getting killed by the cost of deisel. Making them get to their destinations later will cost them even more money. They need to operate at a faster speed to be efficient on fuel also especially in hilly areas. I am not for returning to the double nickels of the 70s. "looks like we got us a convoy"

Many people I know are trying to drive 55, but then they get tailgated even in the slow lane.

Speed limits don't matter on interstates. People in MO fly down them at 20+ miles about the posted speed limit, and there are no cops. I heard they won't pull people over on interstates, because it's too dangerous. So, that's how laws are sometimes meaningless.

Come to Missouri, at least close to St. Louis, on interstates 270/70/170 and you can speed up to 80. as long as you are not going faster than everyone else and get noticed. LOL.

You defintely don't want to pull into Nebraska and speed our state troopers love to pull people over, especially if you have califonria plates, (I know it seems biased, but they do) on it seems whenever I see a car pulled over they have all the occupants out of the car and are searching it for drugs, usually with the drug dogs. And you definetely don't want to speed up to Omaha in the morning because they sit and wait for speeders around 7:30 in the morning they are lined up waiting.

After reading everyone's thoughts I think personally they should reduce it down to 65 at least...after thinking about it, 55 is too slow...like I said it is very scary to be sitting on the side of the road with traffic whizzing by you so fast that your car rocks...been there and done that.

The highway patrol by me likes to speed themselves. I can always see them go whizzing by without their lights on. Several times I've had them pull right on my a$$ like they are about to pull me over, so then I start to pull over and they go speeding by.

I do hear ya , lady, as far as being on the side of the road. Luckily I've never broken down by myself on a highway. But when I was a kid, I remember several times that we had to pull over for flat tires/etc. It was scary to think it just takes one motorist who's not paying attention.... Several people I know had family members killed by a motorist that ran into them like that.

But I don't think that speeding is a direct correlation to striking a car that's on the shoulder. I think that comes more from either drunk driving, dozing off or not paying attention. True there is more reaction time at slower speeds, but to someone who's not even cognizant and on a direct course for impact, even a few extra seconds won't make them react. 55 is just as deadly as 75 in a situation like that.

Even though I speed, I like to think I'm not reckless because I still pay real close attention to everyone around me. And if the situation warrants me to slow down, then I do. Knock on wood, in 10 years of driving I've never been in an accident.

I was watching the news one morning and they were talking about reducing the speed to 55. They say this will help with the consumption of oil. I have notice here in Columbus, Ohio people have slowed down on the freeways. I use to have a lead foot but with the gas prices I have slowed down to 60 - 65mph on the way to work. I noticed if I can do 55 - 60 with the cruise control I can usually get 5 to 7 extra miles to the gallon.
