Damn snakes

My 10 year old was trying to get one of out dogs to come in the house, he started yelling to his mom that he stepped on a snake and it had a bunch of colors.

I go out there expecting to see a King snake (red, black yellow bands). I go outside and look under the AC compressor, well theres the snake and it's banded black, yellow, red, (red next to yellow kills a fellow) which makes it a Coral snake and not a harmless King snake.

I get a .22 cal pellet gun but miss and the snake gets away. I'm not anti snake and Coral snakes are usually very timid but something with venom as bad as theirs is going to die if I have my way.

After everything settles down he tells me what happened. He went outside to get "Clyde" our 10 month old Catahoula pup, (the song on my page is about a Catahoula). Clyde saw the snake before my son did and put himself between the snake and my son, Clyde was facing the snake with my son behind him and backed up pretty much moving my son away from it.

Many dogs will protect their "pack" but Clyde has proven he will, I love that dog.

OMG Lone, I have seen something about them on animal planet. So when you started saying the colors I was thinking the worst Embarassed Did ya give the pup a treat after that? lol. He is gonna be a good dog. We had a german shepard mix and he was glued to my son. He was the best dog (hubby won't let me get another dog because he says we will not find one as good as he was) I hope you find that snake.

I used to live in the "country" when I grew up..constantly found snakes in dresser drawers and pulled back covers every night to inspect before going to bed...my dad would always go outside and let the harmless snakes go without killing them..weeks later we would find them back in house again..we didn't have dogs then..wish I could have had a pup in my bed every night!

Lone, I can remember when I was young, going to feed the dog outside ( we had a german shepard guard dog), picking up her dish and there was a coral snake underneath. SCARY! We lived on a lake at one time (man made) and would find water moccasins and even an alligator one time, in our pool.

My cat hates snakes. He thinks they are a competition for him to catch mice. We have some mice in our computer room, so i let the cat in the room before i go in just to clear it out for me.

I live in Florida and see snakes on a regular basis. I found two huge king snakes mating while on my lunch break. They were strikingly marked with mint green and black bands. They actually eat rattlesnakes which are also plentiful here. I take my lunch in a park where I have seen Gators, Gopher Tortoises and all kinds of other wildlife. Gators are everywhere here. I live in a heavily populated area behind a mall and there are Bald Eagles there on a regular basis. I love all the animals. Even snakes!

That is true. They are the exact color of the leaves on the ground in hardwood forests and are easily surprised. Their bite is not as dangerous as a Florida Diamondback because they are not as big! But they can still kill you if you don't gey help right away! There is a Diamondback in the park near my job that is over 6 feet long and has a head the size of an average mans fist. I have never seen him but the rangers all know him! They share the burrows of the tortoises.

We have problems with moccasins, rattlers, and pygmy rattlers. I love it when a black snake moves in because they will keep the rattler population in my yard down. We search the yard though before letting the kids out to play even though we have taught them what to do if they see a snake.
