consumer report question regarding payday loans

I requested a copy of my consumer report which list all of the loans that are in collections. However the amount on the report is different from the amount the collectors claim I owe. I live in Maryland where payday loans are prohibited, wouldn't I only be responsible for paying the amount on my consumer report? Some of these companies have gotten way more than I borrowed through finance fee's.Can someone please answer this ?

What is reported on your Teletrack report means nothing. Since you live in MD, you would only be responsible for paying back the principle amount you borrowed.

They are prohibited in your state, you are only responsible for paying back the principal, you need to file a complaint with your Attorney General's Office. Demand they mark your accounts Paid In Full since you have overpaid the principal and then some. You will need to be persistent with the companies and do not back down, and keep following up with your complaints with the AG's office.

Since payday loans are illegal in your state, the lenders are not permitted to charges interests and fees. Ask the collection agency to show you the contract copy in case you have signed with the original lender. If they are not able to show any such document and because the loan company is not licensed in your state, you should stand strong over them and involve your state attorney general to deal with them. You are only liable to pay back the principal amount.
