I was just checking the site out and saw a topic regarding recording phone conversations with debt collectors. I was just trying to see if there was anything regarding recording phone calls in michigan as I am having an issue with a car dealership and was advised to record the phone conversation but wanted to make sure it wasn't illegal.

Michigan is one of twelve states that require "dual-party consent". You must inform the other in person that the conversation is being recorded prior to any discussions and if they disagree then you can't record them.

What kinds of problems are you having with the car dealership?

They had sold me a car and now 2 weeks later want to take it back and sell me a different one because the finance company that they thought would take me ended up not. So, what I'm getting from a lawyer I talked to is that the car is legally mine since it is in my name and all and since I hadn't lied on any of my paperwork it is illegal for them to take the car from me. It had been suggested to me to record the phone conversation between the dealer and I so that we have all the information recorded and they can't go back on anything they state that is already in the recording. The answer that I'm seeing most is that you have to inform the other party unless it is a criminal issue.

When you have done nothing wrong, all information put in the paperwork is correct, what's the problem in informing the dealer about the call being recorded?
