My wife and I have over $100,000 in unsecured debt which we have not paid on in more than a year. Calls come in but we never answer because we have nothing that we can provide. We have nearly 20 real esate properties including our owner occuoied home and there are mortgages on all of them. We have been able to keep the payments up, however some have been 30 days late but all are current. Our tenants are generally long-term and we have been doing this since 1994.
We ran into a cash crunch when things went south after 911. About 2 years ago when commission sales from my small real estate business went down we just stopped paying unsecured creditors and have done all we can to maintain our family of 4 kids and one going to college this week.
Last week, I received a Civil Summons from one of my creditors that is in my name only. They are asking for a written response to their filing by September 1 and then they will decide what they will do. What can they do?
My wife works a w-2 job, we have the rentals and I do some real estate commission sales. Managing 19 or so rentals can be overwhelming at times.
We would like to work out some arrangement, however our cash position is not consistemt and we are not likely able to repay the outstanding balance due.
We are talking to US Debt Help and some others that say they can reduce 60-70% of the balance and get us back on the road to recovery.
In light of this story, what service can you provide.
Thanks,
Ron C.
