Yes indeed, People need to be cautious when they engage in online shopping. The ftc advice could go along way in keeping people alert to the dangers out there facing the online consumers. As online shopping gets more and more popular, more and more online scammers will create clever schemes to dupe the unsuspecting customer out of his/her money.

So we have to be vigilant. One tried and tested means of protecting oneself is by checking out the company on the better business bureau.

The better business bureau has a listing of the company's ratings with the public. It details the prior complaints lodged against them by previous consumers. So this should be your first option when you want to check out a company.

Also, make sure that your transaction is occuring over a secure service like verisign or something that is encrypted. You dont want hackers to spy in on your transaction and steal your credit info. Just verify that the transaction is taking place over a secure/encrypted server.
