i received a payday loan a few months ago and then lost my job...so I cannot pay it...I was threatened with going to jail by a law firm and I want to know if this is true or just a scare tactic.

was this a storefront pdl or internet pdl? Please list your state and the amount of the principal amount of the pdl and how much you have paid back. Someone will be along shortly to post your pdl laws for your state and advise you further.

hi bun! no you cannot go to jail for not being able to pay a payday loan. are they internet or storefront pdls? check if the payday loan company is legal in your state or not. start paying if you can for even if they sue in future, you will have the proof to show that at least you tried paying. if you can't, then the next time they call up just say that you are not in a position to make any payments, and you need more time. maybe they are just scaring you to pay up. wait and watch.

Actually, we need to know what state bun is in and also if this is a storefront or internet. If it's a storefront that does NOT prohibit criminal action and they now have a law firm contacting them, it could mean a bit of trouble. We need the state they reside in and what kind of pdl it is before advice is given.

TOO many people seem so quick to answer . and if we do not know the facts a person can get into a lot of trouble. Cannr is correct before any answer to Bun;s quesion can be answered we do need specific info.

I am posting Texas state pdl law for you to see. You will notice that under "criminal action" is does say "unspecified".

** We need to know if this is a storefront pdl or an internet pdl. **

I'm not going to be 'quick to answer' ( whether or not you can go to jail), however, a roof over your head and food on the table is more important than paying them, right now. I had ALOT of PDL's, at one time. Just had nothing left, after they were paid. FINALLY.I had to put 'stop payments' on them, so, i could have the money for rent, food, etc.

sd, you're not being a "quick to answer" person! Wink Hell, we still don't know if these are internet or storefronts loans!!! However, if any of the information helps this member, then that's a good thing.
