New Hampshire Gives Payday Lenders The Boot

New Hampshire will become the latest state to keep payday lenders from gouging their patrons. A measure passed by the legislature will cap interest rates on payday loans at 36%, a drastic change for an industry used to bludgeoning under banked consumers with interest rates exceeding 500%. Payday borrowers spend an average of $793 trying to repay a $325 loan. Let's see how the economic leeches spin this as a loss for consumers.

The state's largest payday lender, Advance America, claims the bill would either force them to close shop or accept losses of $100,000 per storefront. They are "very concerned" for the future of the 200 employees statewide who make their living cheating hard-working consumers.

Quote:
...others argued that payday loans are an option that consumers need; without them, they said, people could be driven to less-savory choices, may depend more on their towns' welfare departments or have to scrimp on necessities. Other options facing someone who's broke - such as bouncing a check - are much more costly than a title loan, they said.

Sen. Bob Clegg recounted times of struggle in the 1970s and 1980s when he had to turn to the "black market" to tide him over. "You can fail, or you can take another chance," said Clegg, a Hudson Republican. "My position, I took another chance."

He would be too embarrassed to go to a welfare office, he said, and would rather "stand tall, make my deal with them and then make my payments because that keeps me a man."

Shazzers. . .good to know. The statement does make my blood boil though as it states that PDL's are an option consumers need and without them we would be driven to less savory choices. . .and what in the flying h..l would that be? Without them we would be in the welfare line. . . aren't many of us ready to go there anyway with the fees we are paying? And last, but not least, we would have to scrimp on necessities or bounce a check. . .aren't these ALL the things we are encountering BECAUSE of PDL's not in spite of them? Who is the victim here? I only pray that these people will someday be stopped in their tracks.

Florida capped them at 10% and they are flourishing here. I would make loans for 2 weeks at 36 percent all day long if I was so inclined!

I agree llw1995, they make it sound as if there would be NO way to survive without them (PDL's). When you think about it, what did people have to rely upon years and years ago? There was no such thing as PDL's then. But, at least this problem is beginning to be recognized, somewhat. Confused

Well, this certainly is good news for New Hampshire, which is following the lead of its neighbor, Vermont, which has just banned them outright. But the funny thing is that after reading posts from members whose checks were taken to pay their PDL fees, aren't they going to the welfare office anyway? What a lame argument from the PDL lenders!

Shazzers. . this is encouraging. People need, no MUST know what is going on. I think the problem is that most of us are embarrassed by what we have done and it is something we don't talk about. I know that I haven't talked to anyone about this but you guys. It's tough dealing with it by myself. There have been legit lending groups for years and many, many people have used them. I think that was pretty much what people used in the good old days. But, times are different now. We have a different advertising medium. Society is so rushed that we want it all, and we want it right now. I know that this has taught me a valuable lesson. If I don't have it, I don't have it but life will go on. If this experiene has taught me anything it is that I CAN do without something that I thought I just couldn't live without. I only hope that once I am through this I can live more "simply" on a regular basis. Thanks again Shazzers for watching our backs.

Llw, that it what the PDL lenders are banking on--that we are thinking that we are the only ones in this mess and won't spread the word. But what amazed me and opened my eyes to the enormity of the problem was when I was going through my own nightmare with Sonic, and called my payroll when they threatened to use the Wage Assignment letter. The Garnishment Supervisor said she got so many letters from them that she started sending them back!! It made me see that this is the last hidden problem in America.

ks. .again I can't say enough about how much peace of mind I get from this site. When I came here I thought I was such a bad person, doing the wrong thing for the right reason. Not any more. I got caught up in something when I thought there was no other way out. Now, I really don't care. If I don't have the money for a bill, I tell them they just have to wait until I get it. It will take some time to get out from under this mess, but I will do it. As for the PDLer's, their day WILL come.

I had a similar experience. When I finally swallowed my pride and spoke to my HR dept. they said almost the same thing. Isn't it ironic though, all that time I had suffered in silence half scared to death and ashamed that I had allowed myself to get into the PDL mess, my HR dept. was no stranger to the PDL vicious circle. Confused

Same here with my HR dept. It is like we think no one else has been in this boat? We see new ones opening up everyday here. And more and more people getting trapped by them.
I admit I was not the wisest individual, but it sooths my ego somewhat to know I am not alone.

Do not worry about it...I will almost bet you you are not alone and they will be supportive...Truth is your HR person may be in the same boat or know someone who is? My bank told me three quarters of those in her office are in trouble.

So, I live in NH and have 9 pdls. I just spoke with Langhorne and am in the process of signing up with them to get myself out of this nightmare.

The thing that I am most worried about is that they will harrass me at work and also call my employer

Hi I. If you are working with Lanhorne then they will be dealing with the PDLs and you should not get any calls. That is what Langhorne is being paid for, to take the heat off of you and pay your bills. At least that is how I understand it works.
