I haven't closed the account yet because I need to verify that I can get a paper check from my employer.

Even a letter will not stop them from debiting. They will even keep trying to debit after the account is closed.

When can you find out if your job can give you a paper check?

See if your bank will block the debits if you can not get a paper check from your employer. Some banks will do that for you. Then, a soon as your check is deposited, close the account.

Volley does a beautiful job with her letters - don't ya think??

Boy are they great! I don't think I could form a coherent sentence due to my hostile feelings toward these companies. My employer will issue me a paper check, but if I close my account...where do I go to cash it? Again, I'm sorry that I sound like an idiot but this is all new to me, I've had the same bank/account since I was a teenager.

why can't you cash it at the bank it was drawn on Just ask your employer to call the bank for you, and they should do it. That is what i did when i got a paper check.

needa-Congrats on getting the paper check from your job! You can cash that check most places and a good place to start, as kash mentioned, is the bank it was drawn on. Most grocery stores and wal mart also cashes them.

You going to close your account right?

I'm also in VA. My employer is based in LA and my payroll checks are drawn on a bank I never heard of in FL. I used a check cashing place 2x before I realized that Wal-Mart was cheaper. They charge $3.00 flat fee to cash payroll checks and their limit is $1,500.

I stopped my direct deposit because of overdrafts and ACH debits from creditors. I'm trying to get that checking account paid off and closed and have opened a new one at a different bank and attached a savings account for overdraft protection (something my current bank didn't even offer when I opened my account there 2 years ago). Once I'm comfortable this account won't be closed on me, I'll start up my direct deposit again. Until then, its $3 every two weeks to Wallyworld to have cash in hand and to keep the vultures from picking me clean before I can pay anyone.
