i got a loan from advanced america of three years ago now im getting calls from ohio with a guy who says he works for fraud of worthless checks of florida and if i didnt pay by the end of the day he was calling the local athoraties ...... so i hung up research online who on the debt which was a company in ne york so i call them they said they were using a law firm called the law group to collect the debt and gave me the number that the guy called from ...then the same guy calledd back all nice wanting to arrange payments i offerd 50 dolllars a week he refused and said i can put you on a hard ship payment and wanted 185 for the first payment i said of an said i would pay fri my money order because i was not givin my bank info ....the oringal loan was for 500 so i wrote the post dated check for 585 when he call he said i owed 985 then when i said i would pay he said he waved 200 and i only 785 .....welll i was put in the hospital and cannot pay any advice i took the loan in florda he says he will put me in jail

Stay off the phone and stop listening to the crap they are handing you. Debts are civil, not criminal...you will not go to jail or be charged with fraud.

What state do you live in now?? Was it advance america you borrowed from? They are a legal lender and could end up suing you civilly.

A DV is a demand letter that forces them to provide proof that you in fact owe them the debt. If they cannot provide you with proof, like a signed prom note or agreement, they cannot collect. It protects you from scammers.

Great thinking and action that if any collector wants payment, NEVER send them a check with your account info on it! Instead, great job with being smart enough to offer a money order instead. And should you ever send a money order payment to a collector, send it certified mail!

Great advice Soaplady! From the sounds of this, I think I know who this is!

Are you sure this rude collector said Fairmont and not Fairlawn?

There is not much is Fairmont but maybe wilted corn and soybeans. And the Law office of Larry Roach is located in the Fairlawn / Copley area. He is known for pulling that kind of stuff. They do operate a few dumbie businesses as well. I will check this out. But if it is him, he does have a track record of taking legal action!

Do as Soaplady suggested; request a DV in writing and stay off the phone with them!
