Hey all -
my daughter's grandmother (her dad's mom - he & I are divorced for over 15 yrs now) was diagnosed with cancer about 3 weeks ago.
She has surgery this Friday. The docs said it was ok to wait this long for the surgery because "it wouldn't matter now, how long we wait". It's not looking good. This was a preventable situation, which makes me angry, but also so sad for my daughter and the people that know and love her grandmother. Of course, I feel awful for her grandmother as well, but this was absolutely something that could have been treated long ago, but was ignored because she "hates going to the doctor".
Ladies and gents, I truly feel we are given common sense for a reason. There are preventative tests and exams out there that every adult should have every year or at an appropriate age - male or female. Please, please, PLEASE have your annual physicals and/or tests as your age requires. You may just save yourself and your family a whole lot of heartache in the future.
Please keep a thought and/or prayer in mind Friday for my daughter's grandmother. This surgery is risky, and it's questionable whether she will make it through the surgery at this point, or if the surgery will only make things worse.
Thanks so much.

thanks so much to all of you for your kind thoughts and words. The hardest part is being so far away right now, and not being able to sit down and talk with my daughter about this. She's 4 states away, and is closer emotionally to her grandma than any of her other grandparents or relatives.

Suebee, I am praying for you.
Getting older terrifies me..My Dad died at age 57 of lung cancer, my grandma died at age 60 of lung cancer, my grandpa died at age 62 of brain cancer, and my other grandma died at age 60 of breast cancer.
I'm only 32, and I'm athletic and try to stay healthy, but the longetivity just isn't in my family. I hope to beat the odds.

Suebee, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's grandmother. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers Friday. I know how hard it is for a child to see his grandparent(s) so sick. My mom died of cancer when my youngest son was 5, and he took it very hard.

Finsfan, I know what you mean. People in my family don't have longevity, either. Three of my grandparents died of cancer between the ages of 54 and 60. One grandfather died of a heart attack at the age of 52 (three of the grandparents I never knew). My dad died of a heart attack at 59. My mom died of cancer at 63. My sister died of a heart attack at 47, and my brother died of a heart attack at 29. I'm 48, so I'm doing everything I can to stay healthy.

Thanks everyone - I'm going to call my daughter today to see what the latest is - I tried to catch her yesterday and couldn't, and she wasn't online last night, which is really weird. (She's ALWAYS on.) I'll update you once I hear from her. It's strange that she hasn't contacted me lately.

Sad!!
Please feel strong, Sue. I will pray for your daughter's grandmom. I know you are thinking about everyone. This is a sensitive moment. You all in the family need to be in touch with each other.

Hi again all -
Talked with my daughter briefly today, she said her grandma is doing ok right now, and is starting to prep for surgery (you know all the junk they make you do prior to surgery - meds to take, system cleansing stuff, etc.). My daughter will be at the hospital during the surgery and will call me as soon as it's over. Her dad can't get the day off from work, so she's bearing the responsibility of calling everyone on her own. The surgery could be as short as 2 hours if it goes smoothly, or as long as 6 or more, depending on what they find when they go in. If the cancer has attached to other parts of her body internally, there is more risk of great blood loss, etc., so if that's the case, the surgery will be longer and there is a lot more danger involved.
I will keep you posted...thanks so much for the prayers & thoughts - they mean a lot.

I waited so long to have a physical, until last year. That is when I found out that I had a uterine fibroid. I know that I can't have babies until it is removed and this could affect my kidneys, but I am believing in God that he will heal me or make a way for me to make it through this just as he will make a way for your family to make it through this troublesome time. We all go through trials and tribulations, but we must stand and know that God is there to make a way for us all. Your faith and love in your daughter and God will heal her and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers and always remember: I(we)can do all things through Christ who strengthens me(us)." Philippians 4:13.
