Many feel that divorce rate higher for Internet Savvy people with following valid reasons.
  1. Chat rooms and sites which reunite friends make it easier for unhappy husbands or wives to meet other people and possibly go on to have an affair.
  2. They work long hours (even at home) without giving enough time for family affairs.

What is your opinion about it? Do you think it can be true?

I think that is just an excuse. If a person is unhappy, they will find an outlet to fill their need. The internet just creates another outlet to make that desire possible.

And since the internet is so dumbed down, anybody can get online and find whatever they want.

Summarizing the feedbacks posted under a similar debate on BBC website:

Most of the people are against blaming Internet as the marriage breaker. Trend shows that it's not Internet but, couples who break the marriages. Internet is just a tool for communication; if people cannot commit, then it's their own problem, Internet is no way responsible for this.

I am quoting a statement that sounds quite good:
Quote:
Blaming the internet for the breakdown in marriages is like blaming an umbrella for the fact that it's raining.

However, there are comments that state Internet has facilitated the breakdown process but it is not the only factor behind divorce rate hike.

Please go through all the comments and give your own views; so that we can conclude if Internet is innocent or not!

Before the internet, the scenario where couples had problems was like this. Him: Sitting in a chair or at the table engrossed in the newspaper, shutting the rest of the world out. Her. Engrossed in anything other than conversation with him i.e., cooking, cleaning, knitting, gardening, etc. Avoidance was and is the culpret.

Very well said DebtFairy; I completely agree with you. If Internet was not there, people would have tried some other ways to look for partners and avoid responsibilities!

No, Internet is not that much innocent! Internet has made it much much easier to fulfill one’s desires. Jason, can you please start a poll on this thread? Let’s cast our votes on it.

Stella, science and technology have always been used negatively. However, we cannot blame technology for that, it's the brain who used it in that way! Boredom is the factor that kills relationships. If Interent is not there, people would read newspaper or spend time in kitchen and neglect the interpersonal affairs.

Check out this link:

divorcereform.org/03statab.html

Those are the federal levels for divorce over the years since 1950. If you look - the rate was highest when the internet DIDN'T exist for the home. So I would say the answer is No - it is not responsible.
