I hope you have opened a new account at a DIFFERENT bank. If you explained to them what was going on you would think they would be more understanding. I wonder if it's just a threat?

Why in the world would your bank not worked with you when you first requested the account be closed. Do you have any documentation? Are they paying your pdl's or is this all bank fees? If it is all bank fees, fight it. If you placed phone called to close this account, it should be documented with their customer service. I do know that if your account is in a negative when you request the account be closed, they will not be able to close it until it is at zero. Can you provide more detail?

Usually banks will automatically close the account anyway when the account is so much in the negative. The bank I work at does that, but I haven't heard of them turning anybody over to fraud because of it. they just charge off the account and report it. I would open another bank account elswhere immediatly before they report you to chexsystem or whatever and it will be hard to open another one by then.

Your right Yondela, now that I think of it, depending on your bank relationship, how long you have had the account and what activity has taken place, they will only extend you so much in the negative. That is a pretty large amount to be negative. Do a search on the internet for banks that do not use the chexsystem, there are few but they are out there.

Well i have opened another account at a credit union bc i was on chexsystems. I seem to be having trouble handling that account also, but its not as severe. Well i was having my paychecks direct deposited to the old account and then once i knew i needed to open another account, i did and am having my paychecks sent to the new account. so after that i asked the account be closed down and they said it was negative and said they couldn't close it. next i then told the bank manager what was going on and that i was contacting T&c to help me and that they would be helpiong me pay off the negative balance to the bank, and after that conversation i thought the account would be frozen, but the pdl's still contuine to take money. i have also asked them not to take they money but they still are. only a few are still taking money, the others have been contacted by t&c. but most of my negative balance is from fees. i am going to talk to the bank manager on my lunch hour. what should i say to him.? any words of advise? i am feeling super lonely right now and don't know where to turn? i can't seem to handle money very well and am currently in the negative with my new checking account. so many people need my moeny and it doesn't seem to strech far enough with 2 jobs and paying for school myself. PLEASE HELP.

I can't believe they are still letting items go through. Usually people can get so far in the negative and then the bank will start returning items. I needed to default on my payday loans and instead of closing my account, I just had my bank put a block on all debits. You should ask your bank to block any debits coming through your account. I think the bank is being greedy at this point and they are just trying to collect as many fees. Even though you asked the PDL's not to take money they are still going to try unless you block the debits. If you don't mind me asking, what bank do you bank at?

AmandaB, when this happened to me, I was honest. I told them I got caught in the payday loan trap and I asked for their help. You are not the only one that your bank is seeing this with I am sure. My bank said they see it alot. Ask them, is there any way they can help with the NSF fees they charged you. These are bank fees, they can do without, believe me.
Just say, Please help me get this straighten out. If you are honest, most likely they will help.

A stop payment costs money too. And, it is not a promise to stop all debits from a pdl. They could have numerous payer id numbers. Even leaving the amount blank is not a promise. If you revoked your permission to acces your account further, and they did, you could have a dispute on your hands. I just went through this with my bank and they gave me my money back since I revoked permisson and the pdl sent me an email stating they received my letter stating this. Do you have anything in writing with your pdl revoking further activity?

I know here at my bank, blocking all debits doesn't cost anything. Stop payments cost, but it shouldn't cost to put one big block on the account. Considering whats going on with your account, your bank should have no hesitation in doing this. Like Linnie said, you should just be honest with them and see if they can refund any fees they have charged you especialy since you have repeatdly asked them to assist you.

No i have nothing with the PDL's in writing. I am so confused on what to do. I just want to get all this behind me. I hope the bank manager will help me out. Yondela i bank with fifth third. i agree that they are being greety. thank you all for your help and advise. I am only 21 and have been through alot with credit card debt and now pdl's. my parents helped me out of most of my credit card debt. I am to ashamed to tell them about all this and i don't think they would help me anyway. I just want to pay this all off and go about being a 21 year old.

AmandaB, write a letter telling them you revoke all authorization to your account immediately, stating your bank name and your account number. Fax it to them asap and send a copy certified. You will have good legal back up if you document everything.

Amanda are you sure this was your bank manager? and not a pdl collector getting fancy? Most banks will close your account send you a letter to pay up and if you dont they send you to collections, all very business like. Have you tried going into your bank and talking to them?

This might be a stupid question, but why can't banks close the acct if it is in the negative? Wouldn't that be what they would do automatically if it was so far gone? I just don't understand that.
