I started learing Spanish because I lived in California and I wanted to know what was being said about me whenever the conversation would slip into spanish from english. But I first started learning spanish from what was written on walls.

I don't know Spanish, I am Russian, so I grew up learning the language and speaking it with my father and grandparents.

How neat! My grandmother came to visit once and brought a lady with her from her retirement residence. This lady had a fascinating story about how she was a child in the revolution and worked in the underground until she escaped to France and met a navy doctor and married him. Very interesting lady, but she smoked like a fiend and cursed a lot. She had no love for the "Dirty Kossacks!" It was great to learn a piece of Russian history first-hand.

French here but I can sometimes make out Spanish words just by my studies of linguistics and language origins at University.

My grandfather had family murdered in that Revolution. And my great grandfather had to disguise himself as a Catholic Priest in order to get out. Most travelled by way of Austria in order to get to Staten Island.

My Grandmother came from Equador..But my Spanish sucks. So I'm a quarter Latina, and the rest of me is Irish, with a dab of Scottish.
