I need to write a letter on debt validation. Does it work right away? Can something bad go wrong when you send these letters?

Nothing should go wrong. You are simply asking the company you write to verify the creditor and the amount of the debt. By law, you have the right to that information.

How fast does it work? Well, according to the fdcpa, they have to respond within 5 days:

Quote:
What must the debt collector tell you about the debt?
Within five days after you are first contacted, the collector must send you a written notice telling you the amount of money you owe; the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money; and what action to take if you believe you do not owe the money.

And if you were thinking, the answer is "no", you do NOT have to send money for them to send you proof. Many collectors try that trick - it's illegal.

Read more about your rights here: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/fdc.htm

Have you recently received a bill from a collector? If so I would say a dv letter would be best to do. I wouldnt say anything bad could go wrong, you certainly want to make sure they actually have your account with all correct amounts of what they are legally allowed to collect from you.

You can find some sample letters in the Do It Yourself section here.

As for it working right away, not always, sometimes they dont validate at all for you and just pass it on to another agency . If that would happen just send out another dv letter to whomever is trying to collect next time.

Also remember if this is the original creditor the fdcpa on debt validating does not pertain to them. The fdcpa is only for 3rd party collectors.
