My fiance and I are in about $50k worth of debt and we are only 25 years old. Our debt consists of student loans (x3), car loans (x2), 1 credit card, and a new tooth we had to finace...good time all around. The point is, we don't fall into the normal "we spent too much and now we can't pay it off". We have been very responsible, just also very unlucky. Is there anything we can do to fix this, we are spending alomst $2000 a month in just bills? We don't own a home, so that is out...any help would be great.

Hmm.. your situation sounds complicated. You surely need some professional help. With such a huge amount of debt, if you can't manage a higher repayment, it will take long time to end up a consolidation program.

Perhaps, you should consider debt settlement with the creditors through a settlement company. Maybe, you will be able to afford the monthly payments and eliminate the total debt by 40% to 60%.

And be sure to check out the student loan section of the board. SOAPLADY has posted an informative sticky that may be of help you as well.

If you choose to do a debt settlement, make sure you're aware of the hit your credit will take before you sign anything. Be sure to check out all of your options, too.

thank you for the reply, that may be of some help. I did read something about a personal loan through a credit union, of which we are a member, is there any validity in that direction?

The problem with being in a lot of debt, is that even with your intentions, not a lot of lenders are likely to give you a large enough loan to cover your debt (income to debt ratio is both a portion of your credit score, and helps creditors determine how much they're willing to lend to you). I'm not trying to discourage you from trying, I'm just trying to make you aware that you may not get a loan from your credit union.

You might also try refinancing your cars through your credit union, to get a lower interest rate.

Be aware that if you do attempt debt settlement, your credit score will take a pretty big hit.

Oh, and congrats on the engagement.
