yes, you can file bankruptcy on your own. All you are required to pay are the filing fees. However, with the 2005 Bankruptcy Law changes, you might want to be very careful to cover all your bases. If you know of a bankruptcy attorney who would be willing to give you a free consultation (without prejudice based on the fact that you will be filing on your own), or would even help you file without having their office do all the paperwork, that might be a better way to go.

There is a cliche that a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a lawyer. I suppose you could but I wouldn't suggest it.

It can be done; I've had a lot of my customer's file pro se on me.
But I also see a majority of the pro se filings get dismissed because the debtor didn't do something right. Remember if you don't fill out EVERY SINGLE form (there may be 20 forms or more), if you don't dot all your i's and cross your t's, then it will get dismissed. And the court won't give you advice, either.
That's why it's good to have an attorney - because they will make sure everything that needs to get done does.
