How long can a company hold on to a civil lawsuit, if they filed it last year, is there a time limit on when they have to act on it or lose it? A defendant on has 30 days to respond, so does the plaintiff have a time limit on getting the case into court before it can be dismissed for not acting on it at all. I have one that is over a year and a half and still have not gotten to go to court yet. Any advice that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Once the Plaintiff has filed and you have answered, it's up to the court to set a date for the hearing, so it's out of the plaintiff's hands at this point. Courts can move slow, but a year and a half seems excessive. It would be in your best interest to contact the court and ask about that, since only the initial correspondence needs to be delivered to you by an officer of the court. Once you have answered the summons any correspondence from the court regarding dates or changes to the case only needs to come to you by us mail.
