if 30 days have expired since receiving initial letter of debt, is it now too late to ask for the verification?

You can always ask for a validation, however, the CA can still continue collection efforts (calls, reporting on CRA, etc.)

However, in the DV letter, you can ask them to cease and desist from calling.

If it has been more than 30 days and you want to force them to validate then you can send a DV letter to the collection agency and a dispute letter to the CRAs. This is a great tactic especially if the debt is past the SOL. If it is past the SOL I would send a full C&D letter also.
