i would definitely question that because
a)it was hand written
b)it said pay this supposed marshall
i suspect this marshall got this info from your trash or he works for a CA assigned to collect.i wouldn't pay this marshall anything.what state are you in?5 yrs is close to the SOL for some states.

i wouldn't trust a hand written note.did this note have any contact info?if not call the police.someone could also be staking you out.maybe i'm just paranoid, but this doesn't pass my smell test.

I found this:
| Quote: | Marshals (with only one "L") are unique to NYC ... they are quasi-official, quasi-private debt collectors. Their manual is online, it can be googled up. They have a lot of strange and wonderful powers, and basically operate on their own with minimal oversight. They get a percentage of what they collect, which is unusual.
Of course it's better not to have 'em in your life ... they have been known to be rather corrupt.
P.S. - Although Marshals are unique to NYC, there is a NJ analog in "special civil" proceedings ... the county sheriffs get percentages when they collect on judgments in special civil.
