My sister worked with one of those companies and I believe they do post something on your credit. However if you are looking for a plan to pay off your debt, you may want to check out a FREE ebook on takecontrolbedebtfree-dot-com.

they may post on your report "settled" but in my book is better than bankruptcy or never paid at all.

Default debt relief is better

debt relief or settlement does affect your credit score but is a good option as it will help you reduce your debt levels. Freedom debt relief is a good choice.

in my opinion its better than bankruptcy, and at some point in time when your far enough in debt, your credit score will become the last thing on your mind.
