Just received some very useful info from a customer service rep w/ BoA, he stated that a hold can be put on to an account by phone, he stated that all that needs to be done is the account holder call into the main customer service line and press the option for lost/stolen dept, then ask for a lost/stolen hold or protection hold to be put on the account, he also stated that the only way for any activity to occur on this type of hold is that the acct holder has to go into the branch location to deposit funds or to take the block off. he said that nothing can reopen acct, atm/checkcard can't be used, essentially nothing can get through, I didn't even have to explain why, just that there's some illegal ach debits being taken out of my acct, he stated no problem. I even asked him if an ach can reopen an acct if hit several times and he said NO. hope this info helps.

Please be careful with BOA. I used to bank with them until someone stole money out of my account through my Visa Check card. When I called in the card as stolen they guaranteed me that no one can take any more money. The next couple of days I had more transactions coming through on my account. I was livid. When I called BOA a different representative apologized and said that the first rep didnt place the hold on for everything. Needless to say, money was gone, they charged me all these overdraft fees and sent me to Chex Systems, when it was their fault in the first place!

let us know how you made out. BOA turned out to be the worse bank I have ever dealt with and I would never recommend them to anyone.

that's why once this hold is put on i will no longer deal with them, I just can't close it due to MO state law on closing accounts and I don't want to rack up a bunch of NSF fees due to the ach transactions hitting w/ nothing in there. I have already opened up a new acct at another bank entirely, my husband doesn't even know what bank it is...

yeah. to make matters worse, the transactions that came through took all the money that was in there for my bills and then they started charging me NSF on the items I did authorize. It was a complete nightmare.

BOA is a nightmare! It took almost 22 months and more letters then I care to admit to in order for them to correct info they placed on my credit report. After the umptenth call I finally got a rep who sent me in writing that my MCard was paid in full & that I had requested the account be closed. Ridiculous !!

BOA is one of the worst ones to deal with. They will tell you what you want to hear, then do the opposite.
Really, it's best to go in person to the branch. You can't know for sure that someone on the other line is really doing what they say they are.

I did go to the branch. The head teller reassured me that ALL FEES will be reversed and the money taken would be refunded after the holds fell off. They just tell u what u want to hear because none of that happened for me. Even though they admitted that the activity on the account was fraudulent.

Here's an example of BOA run around:
When I 1st moved to the metro area I live in; there were no 'personal' branches. There was only one, a business branch, downtown & they were in the basement!
I moved from the west coast & there was a BOA on every corner.
I went in thinking I was a BOA customer; they would help me. It was like a root canal! Once piece of advice the Manager offered; for me to mail in my checking account deposits TO ARIZONA !! Every time I went there; it was a chore.
I quickly changed banks. And now - there's a flippin BOA branch where ever I turn! EEK! Bad memories!

good thing you closed your account when you did because BOA is no better now that they are everywhere then they were back when there were hardly any.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to post a follow-up. I spoke to BOA today about doing the lost/stolen hold. They said they could perform this over the phone, but that to complete it, I would need to go into my local branch. I believe they do this so that they can confirm you are who you say you are via picture ID. Needless to say, I went in, and they have assured me that NOTHING will go through.
I have actually had a pretty good experience with BOA through all of this. They have had no problems putting stops on ACH transactions or anything. I have never been a fan of big banks, and I am definitely not fond of some of Bank of America's practices, but with this experience, everything has been good!
