I have $54,000 in credit card debt. I have been with 2 settlement companies and they have ripped me off. I do not want to file bankruptcy. What should I do to get these bills paid off?

Hello Jacqdun, can we start by telling us which credit card companies you have debt with? And we will go from there.

Have you taken any actions against your previous debt settlement companies? You have put a lot of money there and since they have been able to offer you their services, you should consider some legal recourse.

As Bony stated, get some recourse in getting your money refunded from the debt settlement companies.

jacqdun - the above advise is great, maybe you can get a refund, but as to your current debt I am in a similar situation, I have about 76K in debt I'm working to settle myself. Do you have any funds available, if not are you starting to put some into an account? If you have any available, I would start with the smallest debt, call them up, tell them you would like to settle and can pay them 30%, or whatever your offer is. My debt isn't that old by I offered 40% on one and I'm waiting to see if they accept it.

But this way you can settle the debts yourself and start seeing some progress. Also check out the Do it yourself section for debt settlement letters you can send out.

ALSO - if you do make an offer on the phone, do not give them any checking account info or authorize them for payments until you have something in writing from them! Hope this helps. Many people have been able to settle the debts themselves and work toward becoming debt free!
