I have been burnt by 3 settlement companies. They all got me sued by collection companies. Now the third settlement company told me they were settling my Discover account which was with an attorney/collector but now I find out I have a judgement against me from Discover which I will pay because the owner/employee told me I did not have to appear in court - wrong! What should I do about the other $30,000 in various credit card debt? File bankruptcy, settle myself - what do you suggest? I have not paid on these accounts in over a year so I sure do not want any more lawsuits!

Did you sign up for a free debt consult on this site? If not do sign up either call the 1-800-601-1579 or click on the right side of your screen to speak to someone. Did you happen to check out these companies that you hired beforehand? You need to report them to the BBB in the state that they are operating from, and I think I would talk to an attorney if I were you. How much money have you given them and do you have proof of those payments to them and do you have a contract?
Someone will be along shortly to advise you further those are just the things that I suggest that you do if it were me....hang on someone will be responding to you soon.

Do you have it in writing that they told you that you did not have to show up for the hearing? I would think about filing a civil suit against these settlement company. And if you were already burnt twice why would you even consider this option for a third time? I would never, never do this again, seems like they are just taking your money and giving you bad advice.
About the $30,000 can you afford to settle out, do you have the money to do this? If so, this is probably your best bet, since 1 year is probably not past the statute of limitations.
I am sure that someone else will come along with other advise for you. I wish you luck with your situation and hope all works out in some way that will work with your financial situation.

Yes, I have it in writing that I was not to go to the hearing but the settlement company that I was using has kind of "fell off the face of the earth" so a suit might be a mute point.
Yes, all 3 companies I signed on with were recommended on this board by members or other sites but they sure did not do right by me. I moved from one to another because I am so desperate to get this settled and behind me. I think the "third time is a charm" adage just did not apply to me.
I have about $5,000 now with the potential to have it all by September. I just do not know if I am up for the stress again. My doctor has already had to put me on two heavy duty blood pressure meds for the stress I have already endured from all this. I just wish there was a company that can be trusted to settle this things for you and deliver on what they say they will do. It would be worth the money to me!

Sounds like you have been through the wringer with this whole things, it is a wonder that you even have settle in your vocabulary, I think at this point I would be so peeved off and filing a few lawsuits of my own. What a shame that three different companies would take advantage of you like this.

I would take goodnelly's advice and try the free consult on this site. After all, you can't lose because it is free. They may be able to give you some direction and advice on how to proceed.
I too was with a debt settlement company and then received a summons. The settlement company wanted to continue to charge me for services they no longer could provide for me. I filed a complaint with the BBB and the company was more than willing to give me a refund. Maybe this is something you want to persue. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Anyone can settle debt; do it yourself and get it over with. All you need to do is call and tell them you situation and hardship ... they will pull your credit and you will be a mess all over the place, tell them you must file bankruptcy if they will not work with you - they either get something your can give them or nothing at all.
