I heard that people can get a free credit report once a year. Does anyone know the phone number to call for that? I was wanting to do that so I can see exactly what is out there that I owe, and what company I need to contact to set up payment.

Yes, it's absolutely safe. This is the best way to obtain a credit report without having to wait for it to come in the mail. You can view them online, print them out, and dispute inaccuracies in the report online, all at the same time, free of charge once a year, or anytime you are denied credit.
