Shocked I can't stress this enough. I'm not an expert, just experienced in some parts. I still need help in some cases. I digress. When you go to settle, consolidate or even pay in full get it in writing that your account will be taken care of before you send the money. Ex. You owe $400.00 to the CA CallsAlot. So you call up CallsAlot and tell them you want to pay. They say ok. You tell them that you want it in writing first that when you pay that specific amount the account will be considered closed and they will take no further action. This way if they do you have info stating otherwise. Also, you can prove it especially if you write a check (banks are always more than happy to provide you with copies of cashed checks). Don't believe them if they tell you they can't, because they can....and if they want the money....they will. Wink

Amen! This is so important, whether with a creditor, or even a service provider. I am currently in a customer service dispute with my cable company. It has gotten to the point of I don't feel secure unless their promises are written down. It's a simple rule, follow it:"Get it in writing"

Great post- the only thing I have a problem with is the check thing! I never pay them with anything that has my banking info-just to be on the safe side.

I always use money orders, even when they say I can't, and they haven't refused one yet-just keep your receipt and copies.

Also keep notes of dates, names, and conversations made if you speak with them on the phone. Many collectors have been speachless when I read back to them what they said on such and such date!

I have a folder about 3 inched thick on one CA and their correspondence and my notes!!..karen
