Yes, they can try to collect the debt. But, they can't sue you for non-repayment of the debt as it is well past the Sol period in the state.

Can the monies be deducted from my social securuty check legally ? I was sent a letter by the Dept of Treasury

Oh yeah....student loans and child support for example can garnish your social security.

State debts are exempt from SOL. They can sue you at anytime.
