I have not paid a debt they told be i owe for over a year. Is it too late to do anything about it? Does it hurt me when applying for credit cards? Its a rent debt for under 200 dollars..

First, you are going to want to pull your credit reports and see if this debt is actually being reported to the credit bureaus. You can obtain a free report once a year (or whenever you are denied credit) at annualcreditreport.com. There is no fee or program to sign up for at that site.

Most rent debts are not reported to credit bureaus - most landlords don't bother, unless they take you to court and obtain a judgement against you. Did that happen?

Call the original company and request for an itemized statement of the account. Review it properly and then propose a payment plan. Explain your problems about why you were unable to pay them off in the past. Since you are willing to pay back, they might agree to your terms.

Yes its on all three credit reports. under 200 bucks own rent debt. I tried to apply for some credit cards and i think they could have refused me cause of that rent debt? Or would it be because i never had a credit card before? whats a good starter credit card?

Secured card is the best way to start repairing bad credit. Your bank will help in account with you. You have to put some deposit in advance as a security. Make the payments in time because this will be reflected on your credit.
