My girl friend has 7.5k in debt. It is not consolidated. The consolidation places we have looked at want to change her monthly payment from $300 to $275 with a $50 fee. Avg apr changes from 25% to 15%. Can we expect to find a better place with a lower fee than $50? Over four years (expected repayment period), this will be 2,400 dollars.

Since you have registered with the forum, a credit counselor should be contacting you soon. They will be able to discuss your options with you or you can take a look at the ranking chart under Our Services to check out some other companies. My husband is with Consumer credit counseling. Even though this is non profit, they do charge a $25 monthly fee. His interest charges dropped after three months of regular payments in the program.

You should have quotes from few other companies and compare your best options. At the same time, you can try calling your creditors and put your proposals. If they are ready to work on your terms, you won't have to look for any outside help. You will save some money in fees.
