I had some major medical issues a few years ago and got split from my ex. In the process, i was unable to keep up with the bills that we created (they were mostly in my name tho).

Have you called the dr's office and set up a repayment plan? They might be ready to work with you. Otherwise, you can take some professional help and discuss your suitable options.

I would defintely first call your doctor's office I am sure that they would be willing to set up a payment plan with you, especially if you have been a patient for along time.
If not follow Steg's advice and talk to a professional they can provide you with a suitable solution.

Were the bills from the doctor or from a hospital? And did insurance pay everything they were supposed to? And are you sure the correct procedures were billed to the correct accounts?
If your bills were from a hospital, some hospitals do have programs set up for people who are low income.
