Best route to take?

Ok, so my story in a nutshell is that I had a small company that had to go out of business because it wasn't making enough money. It took me about 3 months to find a new job. The final month of running the company, when we told our clients that we were quitting, about half did not pay their final bill. I basically had to live off credit for 2 months. Now I have ~$10000 in credit card debt and about $3000 owed to the IRS in taxes.

In making sure that the rent/car/utilites got paid, it took me several months of ignoring my credit card payments. I have a good job now and can begin to start paying things, but I could never pay the monthly payments on the cards. I feel a bit overwhelmed and depressed that my previously perfect credit has gone down the toilet. What's my next option. One of my credit card companies has said they're sending it to collections at the end of the month. Should I look at debt consolidation or debt settlement?

Thanks in advance for your input

You should look at the benefits of both. Have you considered studying the DIY section to see if you can do this yourself? If you register as a user on here that entitles you to a free debt consult if you so desire, otherwise people will post to your questions and advise you further.
