When the original debt collector sells your debt account, can the original, the collection agency, and the third collection agency all three report it on your credit report as three separate debts by three different companies. Is it legal for them to do this?

if the same debt is listed twice, then dispute one of the reportings as invalid because it is a duplicate of the same account.

this can be a bit of a confusing situation. the ORIGINAL creditor can still list the debt. However, it should be listed as charged off or sold to a third party collector. basically, this is saying that you had a debt with them that you didn't pay, and that they sold it to a collection agency. you no longer owe the original creditor.

As for the collection agencies, only one can legitimately list it as a debt that you currently owe. if they are both listing it, you should dispute and you may be able to get one removed. hope that clears it up some.

As per my understanding, the original creditor will report the account with a zero balance. The collection agency that has now purchased the debt is also allowed to report with the bureaus. But, if they have hired a different company for collections, I don't think they get the chance to hit your credit file. I believe only two companies can stay in the file, not three. You should dispute the item with the bureau and get it fixed. If this info is entered incorrectly in your file, it is affecting your credit scores severely. You need to have your file with accurate information.

I was blacklisted 8 years ago with SABC for not paying TV Licence as I lost my job. We moved in with family for 2 years. Since then my wife has been paying the TV licence. They say I am still liable for the 2 years. I received a red letter in the post the other day. I have not had any previous mail. Can I be relisted for the same debt?
