The corporations having been greedy for many years and we started bailing them out before Obama took the oath. He, unfortunately, has this mess to clean up and it will take more than a few months to fix. My husband has been unemployed for over a year. He first lost his job in 2005 because of outsourcing. Got a new job after 6 months and then lost it in May 2008 because of outsourcing. He is 50 and most companies don't want to hire an old man. He is willing to take a huge pay cut if necessary. He can't even get hired at the grocery store! He either isn't young enough to do the 'physical work' or doesn't have enough experience to stock shelves!!! LOL What the? Sorry for the rant but I'm tired of Obama getting blamed for this mess. I think he could really help and change things if people would quit fighting him and let him help us!

Almost fell for it

Remember, if you settle for over $600 in most states, you will be taxed on whatever portion you have been forgiven as if it were net income - you get a 1099 form. And the credit bureau report will show "Settled for Less Than Full Amount," and will remain that way and continue to affect your credit score until you pay the remainder. And they say it 'falls off' in 7 years, but when I applied for a home loan, they asked me about a credit card that was "Canceled by Issuer" (bad) over12 years prior (which I explained was because I only used it twice but liked my other card better so it closed due to no activity) - So just a caution, they can SEE a lot further back, it just no longer affects your credit score.

As POSTSCRIPT TO MY REPLAY....THE ANSWER IS "NO" I DO NOT BELIVE THEY CAN THAT THEY CAN BE TRUSTED AND ARE NOT WORTH EVEN ATTEMPTING TO DEAL WITH AS THEY ONLY TELL YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR IN ORDER TO GET YOU PAY SOMETHING.
AS IN THE RESPONSE FROM #7, THEY DO NOT TELL YOU THAT EVEN THOUGH YOU TELL YOUR CREDITORS THAT SO&SO IS HANDLING YOU ACCOUNTS TO HELP YOU WITH DEBT CONSOLIDATION, THEY CONTINUE TO CALL AND HARASS YOU BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT GETTING ANY MONEY UNTIL THE "AGENCY" THAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH GET THEIR MONEY AND THEN WHAT COMES IN AFTER IS WHAT THEY USE TO NEGOTIATE PAYMENTS.
SAME AS IN THE QUOTE FROM #11, THEY HAVE PURCHASED YOUR DEBT AND IF THEY ARE ABLE TO (AFTER THEIR FEE IS PAID) SETTLE YOUR DEBT, IT DOES NOT APPEAR ON YOUR CREDIT HISTORY AS SATISFACTORY AS IT WOULD HAD YOU PAID IN FULL.
ANY FINALLY,FROM #15, THEY LIE TO YOU AND TELL YOU THAT THEY MUST GET AUTHORIZATION FROM THE ACCOUNT HOLDER TO ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS THAN IS OWED WHEN THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE AND ACCEPT OFFERS AT ANY TIME AS LONG AS THEY COLLECT A HEALTHY PROFIT AND ARE CAPABLE OF GETTING THE OPPOSING PARTY TO ACCEPT WHATEVER SUMS THEY ARE OFFERING TO CLOSE OUT THE ACCOUNT, OBVIOUSLY SHOWING AS A SETTLED MATTER AND NOT AS A COMPLETELY SATISFIED ACCOUNT. AGAIN I HAVE TO ASK, HOW ARE THEY GETTING OUR CREDIT INFORMATION WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT?!?!?!?!? DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.......NOT AFRAID TO USE MY REAL NAME!

I've been using Take Charge America on reference from my credit card companies. I've been paying through them for over a year and all is going well. I can see the payments made on my statements, they negotiated my interest from 22% to 9%, they take the money directly from a checking account. I never think about how much I owe, just make sure the money is in the account each month. and instead of thinking about the money I owe, I can concentrate better on making money. www.takechargeamerica.org/

They claim they are a governmental agency and advise me to stop sending money to the Trustee and enroll into their program. Have anyone heard of them?

National Debt Relief Program is a scam - They send you a letter in the mail claiming that they can reduce your debt payments, but really only want to make money off of those in debt. Google it and read the 2nd article (from Newson6.com, Tulsa, OK) for more information.

I am reading a book called money makeover and it suggest not to use these companies because it will definetly ruin your credit. It suggest you pay one card off at a time using the extra money you have from paying the first card off applying it to the 2nd and so on.This sounds good but getting it started is hard. When you stop paying your cards because of increase interest (28-29%) the credit companies will not work with you until you have accrued substantial late fees at the tune of $39.00 dollars a month. I did that and worked out a deal with BOA ,but before it got to the reorganiztion 2,000.00 dollars had accrued,so I guess they win. I really hope there was a real gov.national debit relief.
