I just got advice to stop paying b. of a. for six months in order to negotiate a lump sum settlement.
How bad will the collection agent calls be, do you think?

Unfortunately Granny is right they sure will call, it may be a while though before the calls come but they will come and it's like a bad ex...seemingly anyway. Now I have experience with 10 credit card companies and getting into trouble with all 10 at once since I didn't have money to pay them. so needless to say i was prime target for the calls.
Who gave you that advice? I think you're right you have to have so much time in default to negotiate a settlement, but not entirely sure
