I recently paid off a couple of credit cards, and since it's unnecessary (for my credit score, etc.) to keep these particular accounts open (I have other, older acct's with higher limits), I'd like to close them. I don't want to pay annual fees for cards I won't be using, etc. However, despite repeated requests, I can't get either of them to send me a letter confirming that the accounts have been paid off and closed.

Is this some kind of tactic on their part (in order to keep me on the books, charge me their stupid fees, etc.), or am I just not going about this the right way?

Do you have copies of the cancellation letters sent to the credit card company? You may show this to the attorney general of your state and request them to communicate with the creditors. Seeing the AG involved, the OC might be quick in sending you a PIF letter. Otherwise, you can file a legal case against them on charges of violating the consumer rights.

I haven't sent them letters, I've only phoned them. Do you think that I should write to them though? And if so, do you know if there's a boilerplate text for this somewhere on this forum?
