Go to Salvation Army and most cities have a community action program They can help with your gas bill esp if you are on disability

Leah is right, the Salvation Army helps with alot of needs. Also, do you have a case worker? My son is on disability and he has a cas worker-if you don, contact them to see if they can give you some help or ideas. Sometimes your local churches will offer help too. Good Luck-keep us posted..Karen

I would also try other charities in your town that deal with the homeless and people about to lose their homes. In my county, there is a place besides the Salvation Army that not only helps with back rent, but will also help with back utility bills. The Red Cross also might help as well, depending on what they do in your area. Good luck and please let us know what happens, OK?

You might have called them at a time when they were out of funds--but try back at different times. Possibly after the annual United Way drive at local jobs (which is coming up soon, btw), they would have more cash? And depending on when they get their funds for the year, that would also be a good time. Also, if it's a time of the year where there would be more of a demand for people paying higher bills, like the winter in your area, that could make a difference as well.

who is your gas company?

We have catholic charities around here, a group of church's that assist people also.

I would also call department of public welfare, if you don't get any help locally, go see your local representative. They can get everyone moving, believe me, when they yell, the whole office moves. goodluck and keep us updated.

Please call every church in your area..There are programs at most of them that help people in need, you would just have to take a money management class. I would think that towards the beginning of the month they would have more funds available..If you call now you could be a priority. Good luck, I'm thinking of you..Keep making calls.

In my area, the utility company offers what's called lifeline service, which is strictly for low-income customers. You have to meet certain income guidelines for it. Since you said you were on SSI/disability, possibly you might qualify for something like this offered by your company? It would be worth a shot!

You should get a medical statement from your physician since you are disabled. That's what I had to do to give to my utility company so they would not disconnect my electric service. You should try like an low-income action program. I had to do that one time.

In our community, such a letter wouldn't necessarily mean your service wouldn't be disconnected, which has been told to me--but in case of rolling blackouts, like we had in California a few years back, your service wouldn't be disconnected like everyone else's was.

I was told (by my doctor) that legally they cannot shut off your utitliies if you have a medical condition and that notice is on file in their office. This was the case with my nephew and myself. Maybe other communities are different, but I would think that they would all be the same.
