Rarely do settlements go much under 30% with Chase. So, I would offer 30% in 3 payments and if they do not take it, continue to offer it until they do so.
I suggested 20, with the hope that they might counter with 30 or 40 and she could either take it or counter again with 30. Good luck to you, stretched. I hope you can get a settlement you can afford. Also, keep in mind the portion of your debt that is written off you will have to claim as income come tax time.

Stick with the 30% and keep tellng them that's all you have. They might go for it, or you may come to middle ground around 35%. That's what happened with me. I started with 25% and ended up with just a little under 35% in 4 payments. Good luck!

By signing up for counseling session, your provided details (Name, Email ID and Phone No.) will be forwarded to the company advertising on the DebtCC. However, you have no obligation to use their services.
Some creditors and collection agencies refuse to lower the pay off amount, interest rate, and fees owed by the consumer.
Creditors/collection agencies can make collection calls and file lawsuits against the consumers represented by the debt relief companies.
Debt relief services may have a negative impact on the consumer's creditworthiness and his overall debt amount may increase due to the accumulation of extra fees.
The amount which the consumer saves with the use of debt relief services can be regarded as taxable income.

How much can you afford? Keep in mind, you generally have 90 days to fulfill your payoff agreement with the first payment being due in 10 days.

To be honest, I can afford about $1600 a month for 3 months. Have other cards to settle as well.

Which is about 31%. I'd counter with 20%. They aren't likely to take it but, it might get the negotiations started.

I called back tonight, offered 3 payments of $1400, which is 27%. They countered with 45%.

Counter with 30 and tell them that's as high as you can possibly go.
