Sub: Chase giving me hard time and threats
Thu, 09/23/2010 - 19:10

So I called Chase today to try to talk to them about my financial situation.( I owe about $15,000, unemployed and over 90 days late on payment) and the guy told me that he could not offer me any hardship program, settlemment, nothing because he is not the "regular customer service" dept and the only way I could get back to that department was to pay my minimum balances on all 3 cards and then they would talk to me. I assume he was in the Collection Dept and he could give a damn about my problem. I have been a Chase card holder for over 15 years and never was late on one payment ever until this year when I lost my job. he told me that I would have to send a payment in now and wanted my checking account routing number in which I said no. I dont want them to sue me and I pleaded to him that if they could work with me with some payment plans and he just did not want to hear it.
My question is now, what do I do? Do I ignore his threats? I was going to call back tomorrow and hopefully speak to someone else and see if they will help. I have been reading other stories on here and I guess it comes down to who picks up the phone at Chase.

Do you have the ability to settle the debt for around 30-40% of the balance? Maybe from your 401(k) or by selling some stuff? Because if you do that is what I would recommend. You are getting close to where they will settle with you and will do it over like 3 payments.

You do not have to make a payment for them to talk to you. He was simply trying to get you to make a payment and then you would actually be going backwards. The more delinquent you are the more likely they will settle with you.

You don't qualify for the hardship program because you don't have income. That is one of their requirements. So your best option is to try to borrow, sell stuff or what ever you have to do to get the money to settle with them.

Very simply, the problem you have is that your account is not far enough overdue. They will ask you to settle if you wait another couple of months. The guy you are talking to is paid to do what he is doing. I paid Amex $100k because they scared me before I understood settlement. I really thought they would sue, take my house, lose my job, wife...etc. Don't buy any of it.
