I just checked my credit report and noticed there is an inquiry from TU Canada/Collectcorp from a couple months ago. I moved to the US from Canada 6 years ago and have very good credit here (Fico score 770). First - I have never been contacted by these people either by voicemail or letter so i don't know what it is really about. Secondly, I have nothing here that could possibly be in collection. I do have some issues in canada as a result of divorce and my ex not paying the bills the divorce decree required of him. is there any way to get this inquiry removed from my file? it only shows up on the transunion report, but i am changing jobs and don't want anything negative on file. nothing from my canadian report has ever been linked to my US report before - and I was under the impression that they were totally separate.

Call the company and ask about this inquiry. The inquiry done must have a legitimate purpose. Collection inquiries lower the credit scores severely. You need to get this matter sorted out immediately. Remember, your credit report must display the actual credit standing. If the company is unable to verify the item for you, highlight the item along with proof and dispute with the credit bureau. They will investigate into the matter.

Youll have to fight really hard with Collect corp. Call all the credit bureaus they hit first because the collectorts at collectcorp wont help you at all.

Disputes with the collectors will help to make your point stronger and valid. If you can show your copies about their failure in responding to your dispute, the CRA will give individual attention to your file knowing the fact that the collection company has been doing a fraudulent activity. This will force them to sort out the matter correctly.

i have drafted up a letter to mail to collectcorp seeking proof of authorization to review my credit.
i am also curious however, if this relates to something in canada, how is it legal to search my US credit report? they don't seem to have included my SSN, just name and address.

I also called the number on the inquiry on my credit report and it goes to transunion (in canada) not collectcorp. i got voicemail, not a live person. i'm a little confused by the whole situation.

Speak to anyone related in this matter till everything is straightened out. I will also prefer to do the communication in writing for documentation. The toll free number of Equifax is (800)-685-1111, call them up and ask about this inquiry. The Equifax in US and Canada are the same though.
