We are swimming in dr bills from my husbands surgery and just other dr bills. We desperately need to get out of debt and have no way to do that unless we either file bankruptcy or get a loan so we have one lump payment. Please help!!

Alisa1130,
I am sorry to hear about your situation, however, am glad that your husband got the medical treatment that he needed .
Things will work out for you. Someone will be along soon that can help you with this issue. You are at a wonderful, supportive site.

Have you figured out how much your total debt is? You may call the dr's office and explain your financial situation. They might be willing to work out a payment plan that suits to your present requirements. Or, you may talk to a debt consultant for professional help. He will be able to negotiate with your creditors.

Alisa,
You definitely should sit down and calculate the total you owe and how much you can actually afford. Bridget is correct, if you call the Dr's office, they may work with you, if you ignore them, they will not work with you. That is when they will send you off to collections. They respect you more if you call and make them aware of the situation rather than hide from it.

Welcome to the Community I know how you feel, we were paying medical bills when my son was younger for over 10 years, off and on! Have you talked with them to see if you can work out a payment you can afford? If you have, and this won't work, there is always something like consolidation. Taking out a loan to pay debts, is not a good ides, unless family will do that for you. In consolidation, you can put all your unsecured debts into one monthly payment with lower interest, allowing you to pay them off sooner. Since you have registered, someone will contact you for your free credit counseling, and discuss this, and other options with you. Feel free to ask questions, and keep us posted..KAren

See the DIY section in this website. There are few sample letters with some negotiating tips on settlement. You too can put a proposal to the dr's office and set up a plan. Make sure that you stick to the plan otherwise they will withdraw all the benefits offered to you.

I don't know what your financial situation is like or whether or not you would qualify... but I do know someone who could not pay their hospital bill. They were a full time student and something happened where he needed to have x-rays and other treatment. Anyway, he called the hospital up and explained the situation (not having any money) to them and they sent him a form in the mail. He filled out the form and mailed it back to the hospital. Then the hospital forgave his debt and wrote it off as a loss. He didn't have to pay them anything.

You could check into that. Most hospitals have that type of program available. It all depends on the financial ability to pay. We have that in place at our hospital as well. It's worth a shot to at least call and see.
